1.9 Mon 22nd OT (Giles)
I Cor 2,1-5; Psalm 119; Luke 4,16-30
He has sent me to proclaim the year of the Lord's favour. Luke 4,19
Lord Jesus, you came in obedience to the Father, to proclaim a time of love!
We thank you, we love you and we wish to serve you. I will try to be aware of
the task you give me for that is more important than how I feel or what I think
I have understood. In obeying you, I will be full of joy and will be able to
communicate peace to everyone!
2.9 Tues 22nd OT (William of Roskilde)
I Cor 2,10-16; Psalm 145; Luke 4,31-37
The Spirit explores everything, even the depths of God's own nature. I Cor 2,10
St Paul is saying that the wisdom of God is much more illuminated than man's. We can participate in his wisdom provided we open our hearts to receive the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit and not man's intelligence can help us to understand the mysteries of the Father's love!
3.9 Wed 22nd OT (Gregory the Great)
I Cor 3,1-9; Psalm 33; Luke 4,38-44
He laid his hands on them one by one and healed them. Luke 4,40
Jesus' hands are special, hands that worked, hands that greeted, hands that caressed. His hands express the love of the Father to whom he offered himself. Jesus, lay your hands on my head so that I too may belong to God: my problems are a sign that the enemy has power over me. Lay your hands on me and I will be healed: I will receive any suffering as a gift and will offer it to you as a sign of love!
4.9 Thurs 22nd OT (Rosalia)
I Cor 3,18-23; Psalm 24; Luke 5,1-11
They left everything and followed him! Luke 5,11
Every now and then there is news of a boy or girl who makes an unexpected decision: to enter a monastery or a convent! What does that mean? It means that Jesus is alive and able to talk to us and is worth loving and being put above everything and at the centre of everything, for always.
5.9 Fri 22nd OT (Lawrence Justinian)
I Cor 4, 1-5; Psalm 37; Luke 5,33-39
Then will be the time for each to receive commendation from God. I Cor 4,5
Sometimes I am tempted to expect not exactly an applause, but a sign of approval for what I have said or done. It is truly a temptation, for the most important approval comes from the Lord. It is he who must be pleased with what I do, it is he who will judge my words. The reactions of others are at the most of limited value.
6.9 Sat 22nd OT (Cagnoald)
I Cor 4,6-15; Psalm 145; Luke 6,5
The Son of Man is master of the Sabbath. Luke 6,5
The law concerning the Sabbath was one of the most important. However, it was intended to prepare the people for the Messiah. Now he is present and has received every power from the Father! To you Jesus I wish to submit my habits, for you are the God of my life!
7.9 Sun 23rd OT (Sozon)
Ezek 33,7-9; Psalm 95; Rom 13,8-10; Matt 18,15-20
Where two or three meet together in my name, I am there among them. Matt 18,20
There are communities and families that are helped daily by this promise to apologise, to remain united and to obey each other. In this way Jesus is present amongst them and where he is present he does both spiritual and material miracles! Don't you also want to live Jesus' unity in your family or to find someone with whom to share this commitment?
8.9 Mon 23rd OT (The Birth of the Blessed Virgin Mary)
Mic 5,2-5 (or Rom 8,28-30); Psalm 87; Matt 1,1-16,18-23
He shall be called Emmanuel, a name which means, "God is with us". Matt 1,23
Mary was chosen so that God could be with us in Jesus. She is the first to worship and serve him and to call him by his name. We can learn everything from her: she is our teacher, and so it is with joy that we celebrate her birth today: thank you, Mary for your simple, humble and pure love for Jesus!

9.9 Tues 23rd OT (Peter Claver)
I Cor 6,1-11; Psalm 150; Luke 6,12-19
Everyone in the crowd was trying to touch him. Luke 6,19
To touch Jesus! What an event! But I can touch him frequently in his mysteries, the sacraments. And I receive as much from them as the crowd of which the gospels speak.
10.9 Wed 23rd OT (Nicholas Tolentino)
I Cor 7,25-31; Psalm 45; Luke 6,20-26
Blessed are you who are in need; the kingdom of God is yours. Luke 6,20
Jesus was born poor and lived in poverty with Mary and Joseph and it was in this poverty that he grew in wisdom and grace. Now he teaches that those who decide to live in poverty like him are blessed!
11.9 Thurs 23rd OT (Protus and Hyacinth)
I Cor 8,2-7,11-13; Psalm 139; Luke 6,27-38
Give and gifts will be given you! Luke 6,38
How often the Father astonishes me! We give a litre of milk: and a few hours later, see what happens, we receive two! And in the same way if I am merciful, I receive consolation, if am faithful, joy arrives, if I pay attention, wisdom arrives! The Father competes with us and he always wins!
12.9 Fri 23rd OT (Victoria Fornari-Strata)
I Cor 9,16-19,22-27; Psalm 84; Luke 6,39-42
Fully trained a pupil reaches his teacher's level. Luke 6,40
No-one can expect to be greater than his teacher: no-one can rank higher than Jesus! Humility is the best quality in man. Only the humble are wise, only the humble are careful, only the humble can walk beside Jesus!
13.9 Sat 23rd OT (John Chrysostom)
I Cor 10,14-22; Psalm 116; Luke 6,43-49
Each tree is known by it's own fruit. Luke 6,44
If the fruit is good, the tree is not a wild one! What does Jesus mean by good? Good are those who are with him, those who help others to be with him, to obey him, to spread his wisdom and his Spirit! This fruit is not good just because it is good for our health! The good tree is always and only Jesus!
14.9 Sun The Exaltation of the Holy Cross
Num 21,4-9; Psalm 78; Phil 2,6-11; John 3,13-17
Everyone who has faith in him may have eternal life! John 3,16
Jesus was sent into the world for this; he did not come for his own sake , but for ours. Men and women without Jesus are dominated by the realities of this earth to the point of feeling oppressed. It is not surprising that people with incurable diseases often want to end their lives. But those who begin to love Jesus and are aware of him and his cross, begin to live and enjoy life!
15.9 Mon Our Lady in Sorrow
Heb 5,7-9; Psalm 31; John 19,25-27 (or Luke 2,33-35)
Mother, there is your son! John 19,26
Let us contemplate Mary in the mystery of her suffering. Below the cross she hears Jesus' words as he entrusts her with a new service in God's kingdom. She is to continue to be mother and to love as a mother loves, her son's disciple. While her suffering is worst she is given her ultimate task. She is to be mother for ever, the mother of every member of the Church, mother of the Church, mother within the Church. Thank you, Mary, for loving us as a mother!
16.9 Tues 24th OT (Ninian)
I Cor 12,12-14,27-31; Psalm 100; Luke 7,11-17
God has shown his care for his people. Luke 7,16
This was what the crowd said at seeing Jesus' miracle: Jesus had spoken to a dead person who had replied! The widow was given back her only son! Death gave way to the Lord's word. The people were overjoyed! The presence of Jesus is truly God amongst us!
17.9 Wed 24th OT (Hildegard)
I Cor 12,31 - 13,13; Psalm 32; Luke 7,31-35
The higher gifts are those you should prize. I Cor 12,31
Saint Teresa understood these words; if I do not love I am not within the body of Christ, I am not God's mirror! Love is the greatest gift and is essential in being pleasing to the Father and useful to the Church and the world!
18.9 Thurs 24th OT (Joseph of Copertino)
I Cor 15,1-11; Psalm 118; Luke 7,36-50
Your faith has saved you, go in peace! Luke 7,50
Judged and condemned by the others, the woman continued to show her love to Jesus! That love was a sign of faith, the fruit of that faith which saved her: one cannot stop loving! No judge can stop the faith that loves Jesus: it brings salvation for oneself and for many others. It is love which shows one's faith in Jesus rather than man's trust in his own actions
19.9 Fri 24th OT (Januarius)
I Cor 15,12-20; Psalm 17; Luke 8,1-3
Christ was raised to life! I Cor 15,20
Death and resurrection are great events which are full of mystery. We all die, Christ rose again! We all die because our bodies cannot carry a full, eternal life. But we will rise again with Jesus! He has risen and lives with God: in receiving his Spirit we will receive eternal life if we live in joyous obedience to the Father!
20.9 Sat 24th OT (Eustace)
I Cor 15,35-37,42-49; Psalm 56; Luke 8,4-15
Those who bring a good heart to the hearing of the word, hold it fast and by their perseverance yield a harvest. Luke 8,15
Jesus explains that there are people who listen to his word and consider it so important that it is able to transform their lives. The fruit of the Word arrives after a long time like the fruit of a seed. It is a time of perseverance: a sign of fidelity and true love!
I you wish to order the calendar for 2009, please do not wait to order it. The form is printed on the page after 8th September.
21.9 Sun 25th OT (Matthew)
Isa 55,6-9; Psalm 145; Phil 1,20-27; Matt 20,1-16
Go and join the others in the vineyard! Matt 20,7
Jesus demonstrates how much the Father loves and that it is free of charge! The last workers to come will receive a full salary, much more than they deserve. We find it hard to understand this parable because we consider ourselves among the first workers. How presumptuous! But we are amongst the lucky ones; we arrived late to work with Jesus, to give ourselves with him for his vineyard, the Church!
22.9 Mon 25th OT (Maurice and Companions)
Prov 3,27-35; Psalm 15; Luke 8,16-18
Those who have not, will forfeit even what they think they have. Luke 8,18
If a person has no love for Jesus, the only Saviour sent us by God, nothing will save him. For what reason to have worked, to have studied so hard, to have suffered, to have built so much? One thinks one is deserving for having done these things, but God says: why did you not accept my gift? Why did you not listen to my Son, Jesus who was gentle and humble and never frightened you?
23.9 Tues 25th OT (Thecla of Iconium)
Prov 21,1-6,10-13; Psalm 119; Luke 8,19-21
The Lord weighs up his motives. Prov 21,2
Once I was particularly attentive to a person, but this gesture of love was wrongly interpreted by others. I was strongly tempted to lose heart and not to complete my tasks when I remember that the only opinion that counts is God's. And I could not blame those who were judging me, but offered up to Jesus the suffering and the solitude of that moment.
24.9 Wed 25th OT (Pacificus of San Severino)
Prov 30,5-9; Psalm 119; Luke 9,1-6
They set out announcing the good news and healing the sick. Luke 9,6
When a man obeys God, God obeys him! The apostles set out and in obedience to Jesus, they proclaimed his Word. And God was present with healings in order to testify that they were his instruments and that words were to be accepted without fear!
25.9 Thurs 25th OT (Sergius of Radonezh)
Eccles 1,2-11; Psalm 90; Luke 9,7-9
Vanity all is vanity! Eccles 1,2
When we think of our death we realise that the things of this world are not worth worrying so much about. Everything passes, everything ends; we have to leave everything behind. Everything that is beautiful and good should arouse in us only the desire for Jesus who will accompany us on our last journey and will be waiting for us at the end of it.
26.9 Fri 25th OT (Cosmas and Damian)
Eccles 3,1-11; Psalm 144; Luke 9,18-22
And you? Who do you say I am? Luke 9,20
I would like to reply as Peter did. I cannot say with certainty what you are for your Father, or for the world, or for your Mother, Mary. I can only say what you are for me. You are the source of my peace, of my ability to love and forgive, of my joy and of my earnestness, of my hope for eternal life. You are much more: every day adds a little more of my knowledge of you!
If you wish to order the calendar for 2009, please do not wait to order it!
Thank you! You will find the order form after 8th September.
27.9 Sat 25th OT (Vincent de Paul)
Eccles 11,9 - 12,8; Psalm 90; Luke 9,43-45
Delight in your youth, young man! Eccles 11,9
At last someone who appreciates the joy and carefree time of youth! After reading about the vanity of all things, we read about the joy of youth in Ecclesiastes. So that it should not end in despair we are encouraged to consider God's wisdom. Young people should be discerning in their thoughts and actions!
28.9 Sun 26th OT (Eustochium)
Ezek 18,25-28; Psalm 25; Phil 2,1-11; Matt 21,28-32
The tax collectors and the prostitutes believed him! Matt 21,32
In saying this Jesus compares the devote and pious Pharisees to people of bad repute, who despite their reputation were humble and had listened to John and had started on the path of conversion which leads to the lamb of God. What they had done in life was of no importance from the moment they accepted Jesus, the Son of the living God.
29.9 Mon Archangels Michael, Gabriel and Raphael
Dan 7,9-10.13-14 (or Rev 12,7-12); Psalm 138; John 1,47-51
I saw you under the fig tree! John 1,48
To celebrate the Archangels we have the reading from the gospel about Nathanael: Jesus compares himself to a ladder up and down which, God's angels go! What Jesus sees is very important. He saw his future disciple reading the Scriptures (apparently that is what "under the fig tree" means!). Whoever searches in the Scriptures is like the angels, always ready to do God's will.
30.9 Tues 26th OT (Jerome)
Job 3,1-3,11-17,20-23; Psalm 88; Luke 9,51-56
He set his face resolutely towards Jerusalem. Luke 9,51
The disciples know that Jesus will not be welcomed in Jerusalem. He himself had told them several times. They are, therefore, astonished that he is so resolute in going there. But Jesus knows that this is the Father's will and he does not hesitate for an instant. We love you, Lord Jesus, for offering yourself to fulfil God's plan of love the cost of which is to sacrifice yourself.
