Sàdrach,
Mesàch e Abdènego, deportati con Daniele a Babilonia dal re Nabucodonosor,
vengono riconosciuti come sapienti, sono onorati e scelti per incarichi
importanti nel regno. Essi rimangono fedeli al Dio dei loro padri e non cedono a
pressioni e minacce di persone invidiose, che spiano il loro comportamento
riguardo allordine di adorare la statua del re. Per la fedeltà alla propria
fede, e quindi disobbedienza ai decreti regi, vengono gettati in una fornace
accesa. Fiduciosi nel loro Dio sono da lui protetti: un suo angelo li custodisce
dalle fiamme, tanto che ne escono incolumi.
Questo
episodio, benché appaia leggendario, è un grande messaggio per tutti i tempi,
e, senza dubbio, particolarmente necessario per il nostro.
I
cristiani nel mondo sono sempre in condizione di dover scegliere tra
ladeguarsi alla mentalità del mondo e la fedeltà a Gesù, tra la sapienza
del Vangelo e le decisioni già confezionate dai mass-media e dalle mode e dai
comportamenti facili che simpongono come un ricatto. I cristiani sono
spessissimo messi in condizione di dover fare obiezione di coscienza: penso a
varie situazioni nelle scelte economiche e politiche, e in quelle dello svago,
ma ancor più nella mentalità che costringe le famiglie a limitare il numero
dei propri figli a due o in quella che suggerisce laborto come scelta
possibile se non obbligata, alla mentalità che concede ai fidanzati come
strumento di conoscenza reciproca la soddisfazione sessuale e la convivenza, e
li costringe a spese assurde per la celebrazione del matrimonio,
Il
Signore manda il suo angelo a coloro che gli sono fedeli! La loro vita sarà
benedetta e diverrà benedizione per molti!

The
picture is a reproduction of frescoes common in the rock churces of Cappadocia (Turkey
X-XI century); it is inspired by a passage in Daniel 3, 1-30 concerning Sàdrach,
Mesàch and Abdènego who were deported with Daniel to Babylon by king
Nebuchadnezzar.
They were recognised as wise men and honoured and given important roles
in the government.
They remained faithful to the God of their Fathers and did not give in to
the pressure and threats of those who were jealous of them and spied to see if
they bowed down in adoration to the statue of the King as had been decreed.
Because of their faith and consequent disobedience, they were thrown into
a fiery furnace.
Trusting in God they were protected and one of his angels saved them from
the flames.
Although
this episode sounds like a legend, it contains a great message for all times and
which is, without doubt, particularly suitable for our age.
Christians today, have to make the choice again and again between
conforming to the mentality of the world and remaining faithful
to Jesus, between the wisdom of the Gospels and the decisions already
made by the mass media and their simplistic attitudes which are imposed like
blackmail.
Christians often find themselves having to make conscientious objections:
situations requiring decisions in economics and politics, free time
activities, but even more so in the mentality which imposes on families the
limiting of children to one or two or considering abortion not only a possible,
but necessary choice.
Or the mentality that living together or
satisfying sexual needs will help young people to know each other;
or the absurd expences sometimes involved in wedding celebrations
..
May
the Lord send his angel to those who are faithful!
May their lives be blessed and become a blessing for many!
